Arizona State coach Kenny Dillingham is encouraging players to explore transfer opportunities even as the team prepares for the College Football Playoff. He announced Monday that players who enter the portal can still compete with the Sun Devils during their postseason run.
The transfer portal remains open until Dec. 28, with an additional five days for postseason teams after their seasons conclude. While many players planned to wait, Dillingham urged them to enter now, emphasizing the importance of maximizing their chances to find new opportunities.
ASU, which earned a first-round bye after winning the Big 12 Championship, doesn’t play until Jan. 1. Dillingham worried other programs would fill their transfer spots by then, potentially limiting options for his players. Allowing players to enter early while staying with the team benefits everyone involved.
Dillingham reassured players that entering the portal wouldn’t affect their standing with the team, as long as they maintained commitment to meetings, workouts, and other responsibilities. “We’re on the same page, helping you achieve your goals while still being part of this ride,” he said.
Last season, ASU added 29 players through the portal but saw 28 depart. After a successful second year under Dillingham, it’s uncertain how this year’s portal activity will unfold, though the team’s progress suggests a strong future.
