VAIL, Ariz. (KVOA) — Several Arizonans are having to change their holiday plans to travel to Mexico this season. It has to do with the Lukeville Port of Entry closure. An unexpected closure at the Lukeville Port of Entry is changing Diana Garcia’s holiday plans to go to Rocky Point Beach, Mexico.
“It’s going to ruin it for a lot of people. A lot of people,” Garcia said.
Garcia has lived in Vail for 12 years now, but Rocky Point Beach, Mexico is her destination getaway.
“We have a 3 bedroom, 2 bath condo on the 8th floor so it has a beautiful ocean view and my son is autistic and he loves the ocean,” Garcia said.
Now Garcia is scrapping the trip this Christmas because Lukeville is the only route her family is comfortable with.
“We’re staying home. We really wanted to be on the beach celebrating with our family there.”
Garcia said that based on Facebook groups she follows a lot of people are like her and they’re not going to Rocky Point Beach either.
“It’s going to affect the workers. Everything,” Garcia said.
Including the border town, Nogales.
It is the alternative route to get to Rocky Point Beach Mexico. News 4 Tucson spoke with Olivia Ainza-Kramer, the CEO and President of the Chamber of Commerce in Nogales.
“However the longer wait times at the border could discourage a lot of people to come,” Garcia said.
At the end of the day, everyone is hoping the Lukeville Port of Entry opens up rather than later.
“The U.S. and Mexico need to work together on. I know it’s the migrants that are coming through,” Garcia explained.
